"So what do we see and why? We all approach the art work independently within a shared
environment, looking, imagining, creating..." AL Stone
Born in Zandvoort, The Netherlands in 1957, Al Stone emigrated to Los Angeles, California with his parents and sister in 1961. In school, Al's creativity was expressed both in visual art experiments and in kinesthetic designs for such items as bicycles linked with skis. His later schooling included a special weekend program for high school students at the Art Center of Design, where he focused on two-dimensional drawing, life study and composition. Al graduated with honors from Simi Valley High School in 1976, accompanied by a scholarship to be used to continue his education in art.
Pierce College in greater Los Angeles opened opportunities not only for coursework appropriate to Al's expanding interest in three-dimensional art, but apprenticeships to sculptors, teachers, and other artists who saw his potential and made sure he developed his art broadly. Continuing at California State University at Northridge, Al taught classes, worked for professors, and used coursework time in studios where he could explore new options. Working with Plaster, cloth, barbwire, Bamboo and other material Al create strong visual and social related art work. Here he graduated, again with honors, in Three-Dimensional Art program in 1980. Shortly after that, he moved to the art district in downtown Los Angeles, where he built relationships with other artists, curators and galleries. Al's main body of work at this time consisted of floor sculptors, 3D wall piece as well as large painting stretched like animal hides between bamboo bars, expressing conceptual ideas from his interest in cultural anthropology and sociology.
Six months of travel through Europe followed in 1985, which finished with a show in Liege Belgium and then Back in down town Los Angles making art work and showing in Los Angeles and San Diego areas till his move to Liege, Belgium in 1987. With his spouse Lydie they built a house in the historical district of Liege, Belgium. In his studio Al create bas reliefs using wood, wire covered with paper and then drawing and painting these works and scenes with inks expressing life's complexity. Al participated in art shows, stage design and photo documentation. After ten years in Belgium, Al moved with Lydie and their daughter to Portland, Oregon, where he continued all the forms of art work he had developed.
The imagery, themes and concepts which Al's work is rooted in, arrive from his interest in cultural anthropology and our cultural environment. He's questioning perception; the act of looking and its mediation and effect. With the understanding that our culture is a mode of measurement of comparison and context, and in such there are no "absolutes". What Al is exploring is how we exist in participatory universe, our awareness of physical phenomenon and how they are defined by the questions we ask of them and the limits of expressions.
